about

When jazz musicians meet to play Monk's music it's like meeting on holy ground, a sanctuary, a place where you leave your weapons at the door. Monk's world is a beautiful abstract place where it's ok to just be relaxed. It's ok to swing, no hyper-modern concept required, but that's cool too. Happiness and sadness are in every chord. Irony abounds without pretense.
The Music on this record isn't perfect. The rawness here reminds me of my favorite Monk album, 'Live at the Blackhawk'. Forms are blown on that album, the beat is flipped, there are miscues and glasses clinking, etc. But I love it. This is jazz, perfection in imperfection.
Drobka and Schaub swing like blood brothers. Weller's perfect tone and post-Hessian melodic language add weight and color to the band's sound. Breiwick is a fire breathing dragon on this record. The audience stayed all night, unable to leave Monk's sanctuary until bar time.

Thanks friends! I hope you enjoy this record.

about

Green Monk Milwaukee, Wisconsin

Green Monk plays the music of Thelonious Monk with Peplin's Grant Green inspired guitar sound. The line-up on this record is a dream team of Milwaukee Chicago Boston circles. Weller, Drobka and Peplin are all Berklee alumni, while Breiwick veritably runs Milwaukee's jazz scene. This was Clay Schaub's first gig in Milwaukee, as he hailed from Denver as a first call bassist. ... more
